The Genie nominations honouring the best in Canadian film were announced yesterday, with internationally acclaimed films like Eastern Promises and Away From Her getting major recognition.

David Cronenberg’s bloody Russian mob thriller will square off against
Sarah Polley’s Alzheimer’s drama in the best picture category along with Denys
Arcand’s Days Of Darkness.

 


Shake Hands With The Devil and Continental, A Film Without Guns are also
in the running.

 


Actress Julie Christie, meanwhile, is nominated in the best actress
category. She’s already up for an Oscar for her turn in Away From Her, and is
squaring off at the Genies against Anne-Marie Cadieux of the Quebec film Toi,
Ellen Page for The Tracey Fragments, Molly Parker for Who Loves The Sun and
Beatrice Picard for Ma tante Aline.



Her co-star in Away From Her, actor Gordon Pinsent, is up for a best
actor Genie. He’s facing Viggo Mortensen for Eastern Promises, Roy Dupuis for
Shake Hands With The Devil, Marc LaBreche for Days Of Darkness and Claude
Legault for The 3 Little Pigs.



Polley, Cronenberg and Arcand are also nominated for best director
honours, along with Ottawa’s Roger Spottiswoode for Shake Hands With The Devil
and indie favourite Bruce McDonald for The Tracey Fragments.



The 28th annual Genie Awards will be handed out March 3 in a gala event
in Toronto.
