Getting into the right Headspace

Recreation, relaxation and reassurance are hitting the city’s streets with yesterday’s launch of Aspen’s Headspace, a mobile youth service centre with one gnarly paint job.

Headspace, described as a “toy box on wheels,” will provide youth with an opportunity to play indoor and outdoor games, watch movies and surf the net, work on homework or participate in support groups.

“This will allow youth to arrive at their personal positive headspace,” said Shirley Purves, Aspen’s chief executive officer.

She said the goal is to have fun while providing an opportunity to stay out of trouble during after-school hours when working parents may not be home.

Purves said it’s especially important for new communities without existing infrastructure.

“It helps build their capacity to be a community right from the get-go.”

Program manager Kevin Hodgson said they still can’t imagine Headspace’s full potential.

Kristyn Konowalchuk, 16, said she’s excited to use the bus, especially its flat-screen television.
