Mel Gibson’s lawyer is striking back at allegations by Oksana Grigorieva that he physically assaulted her during an argument, according to Hollyscoop. “Mel was hopeful their breakup was behind them and Lucia would be the beneficiary of co-operative parenting,” says Stephen Kolodny, who insists Grigorieva is making the claims in order to win better access to the couple’s eight-month-old daughter. “Apparently Lucia will be denied that good fortune. Making sensational allegations is not the way to resolve this. Mel wants a custody settlement or a resolution in court, not the media.”

Grigorieva’s accusations come months after the Russian pianist spread cryptic messages about the reasons behind the couple’s split. While the Aussie-reared actor has remained silent up to now, sources say Gibson has been forced to fight back in the media for fear of losing his reputation and custody of his daughter.

On June 25, Gibson filed for a restraining order against Grigorieva, 40, in the Los Angeles Superior Court. Radar Online reports that the case is sealed, meaning the documents cannot be released to the public.
