A 16-year-old girl is recovering in hospital after friends, strangers and trained rescuers worked together to save her from what could have been a deadly day on the waters of a Fraser Valley river.

RCMP in Agassiz say Amelia Victor was swimming in the Chehalis river on Wednesday when she was overcome by the strong current.

Two other teens managed to drag the unconscious girl to the river bank while two men on the far side of the river swam across to stay with her while the younger pair went for help.

As rescuers arrived, two RCMP officers also swam across the river, hauling a backboard — and hooked the injured girl to the police helicopter hovering above.
