Giving in tough times

When Krista Kowalchuk got Ziggy from the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind, she got more than a guide dog. She got a new lease on life.

Thanks to Ziggy, Kowalchuk can go to work full time and lead an independent life, she said yesterday.

Bell employees and retirees presented $194,000 in donations to 80 groups in the Ottawa region Thursday. Despite tough economic times, donations have actually gone up, said Bell’s associate director of the employee giving program, Patti Murphy.

“In the Ottawa region, people are really generous,” she said. People in the capital are so eager to give because many see the causes firsthand, through volunteer work, she said.

“Especially in these times, it’s important for companies and employees to continue supporting these important organizations,” said Bell spokeswoman Jacqueline Michelis.

“Your kindness makes us a better community,” said Shepherds of Good Hope’s Rob Eady, who spoke on behalf of charities yesterday.
