Glenn Frey, guitarist and founding member of the Eagles, dies

The music icon sang lead vocals on many of the band's top hits.

The Eagles are the quintessential American band, but fans areheartbroken today after newsthat guitarist and founding memberGlenn Frey has died.

TMZ reported that Frey succumbed to complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia. "Frey had been battling intestinal issues for months and had surgery in November," TMZ explained. "We're told in the last few days his condition took a turn for the worse."

The BBC added that Frey's family and fellow bandmatesissued a statement that read in part, "Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all he has given to us."

Frey died in New York City. He was 67.
