Global crisis grounds cargo

A sudden economic downturn has thrust the air freight industry into an unexpected crisis. Freight traffic was down by 21.4 per cent at Lufthansa’s cargo division during the busy Christmas season.

The International Air Transport Association said yesterday that international air cargo traffic plummeted by an unheard of 22.6 per cent last month as consumers and companies drastically scaled back their consumption of goods.
