Only hours after unionized workers at the Globe and Mail rejected the company’s latest contract offer, management signalled intentions to avert an impending strike.
Editorial, advertising and circulation workers voted 89 per cent Saturday against a revised proposal emailed to them a day earlier.
A union representative said the company contacted its team later that afternoon and the two sides agreed to resume negotiations tomorrow morning.
“It’s a positive sign that they want to come back and talk, and hopefully that means they’re prepared to make some compromises,” said Brad Honywill, president of Local 87-M of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union, which represents employees at the Toronto-based daily.
The strong rejection, based on a 65 per cent turnout, comes just days ahead of a strike deadline of 12:01 a.m. July 1. Workers voted almost unanimously last weekend in favour of a walkout.
