TORONTO - General Motors says more than 256,000 Canadian vehicles are included in a recall to fix power steering motors for several compact models.

The voluntary recall of 1.3 million cars in the United States, Canada and Mexico affects the Chevrolet Cobalt, Pontiac G5 and the Pontiac Pursuit.

The recalls affect Cobalts from the 2005 to 2010 model years, Pontiac G5s from 2007 through 2010, as well as 2005 and 2006 Pontiac Pursuits.

GM says the vehicles are safe to drive and never lose steering, but they may be harder to drive when travelling under 24 kilometres an hour.

It says the condition takes time to develop and tends to occur in older models.

The automaker is getting parts to replace the electric power steering motor and will notify customers when to bring their cars to dealers.
