Emm Gryner
Album: Goddess
Label: Dead Daisy/Outside
Rating: *** 1/2

When dealing with the dread of a damaged romance during a dreary cold winter, one needs time to be alone to make sense of it all. That’s at least the impression left from this Ontario songstress’ — and Dead Daisy label owner’s — 11th album. Gryner’s use of austere piano-based pop noir and stripped-down folk works satisfactorily with all those lyrical images of frozen lakes, skating rinks, the cold weather, burned-out buildings, drawing blood … Vicious stuff here, tempered only by Gryner’s soothing soprano. There’s a good reason why the likes of Bono, David Bowie and Danny Michel have lauded praises her way.
