The Granville Mall will be closed to vehicles on weekend nights this summer.

The closures, which extend from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., begin Friday and will run until October.

Over the past couple of years, Vancouver police have experimented with closing the entertainment district to traffic in an effort to reduce drunken fighting and violence.

According to police, the trial closures resulted in a noticeable drop in violence, partly because people are able to move around more freely.
