Grey Nuns makes room for babies

Babies are booming in Edmonton, and the busiest birthplace now has more room for our city’s newest citizens.

The Grey Nuns Hospital delivers more babies than any other area hospital, and is opening the doors to a new neonatal care unit 10 times larger than the current facility.

The 10,000 square-foot wing can accommodate 34 newborns and their families, with separate space for each child, and room for parents to sleep.

“It really provides a much better environment for the babies,” said Greg Hadubiak, Edmonton Acute Care and Covenant Health vice-president.

“They’re used to being in mom’s womb for the gestation period, and now we can recreate that as much as possible.”

The new unit was designed with extra attention paid to soundproofing, light control, and constructed with baby-friendly materials.
