Grits pick candidate for seat mysteriously vacated by own MLA

The Liberals have picked their candidate to replace former Glace Bay MLA Dave Wilson, who resigned under mysterious circumstances.

The Liberals have picked their candidate to replace former Glace Bay MLA Dave Wilson, who resigned under mysterious circumstances.

Geoff MacLellan won the nomination Friday after rival candidate Edna Lee withdrew from the race.

A Glace Bay native, MacLellan is currently manager of Cape Breton University’s Canadian International College Partnership.

Wilson held the seat for the Liberals for a decade but resigned his seat this March, shortly after the expense scandal broke. Wilson confirmed to Liberal Leader Stephen McNeil that he had been approached by the auditor general, who is conducting a forensic audit of MLAs, and said he had hired a lawyer. He did not explain why he resigned.

Glace Bay is one of two upcoming byelections. The other is the seat of Yarmouth, which was left vacant when Tory MLA Richard Hurlburt also resigned shortly after the expense scandal.
