Group fights to save City Centre Airport

Should the City Centre Airport be transformed into a downtown community for 30,000 new residents or should it remain open and continue to serve as a convenient way to access industry in the north?

As far as Chuck Allard, Envision Edmonton’s chairman, is concerned, the electoral made that decision back in 1995 when they voted to keep the airport open and Allard said democracy has been challenged by city council’s decision to shut it down.

“We believe the city’s decision to close the City Centre Airport is in direct violation of their promise in 1995 to keep it open as a general aviation facility,” Allard said at a press conference yesterday. “We believe that a decision of this magnitude should be made by the people of Edmonton and not a handful of elected politicians.” Just over a year ago, council decided to begin a closure of the airport over two phases.
