Growing ward’s four candidates to debate

Down in the southwest corner of the city, there are 62,000 constituents who make up Ward 5, and that number is expected to grow.

Because of that growth, traffic is a major issue for commuters who use the Whitemud and Henday freeways.

Ward 5 is a strong mix of new communities to the west, where it borders Parkland County, and mature neighbourhoods that reach the river valley.

Karen Leibovici is the incumbent in the ward. Leibovici has been a councillor since 2001, sits on a number of committees and was an MLA in Edmonton-Meadowlark for two terms in the 1990s.

Leibovici’s three challengers are Steve Bergeron, Mark Grandish and Brian Kendrick.

The candidates will go head-to-head on Oct. 12 at the Archbishop Oscar Romero High School.

The public forum starts at 7 p.m. and can be viewed online at www.edmonton.ca.
