GTA summit tackles global recession

More than 250 leaders from the worlds of business, academia, labour and politics will meet today at Markham’s Seneca College campus for the Greater Toronto Region Economic Summit.

Chaired by Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and Torstar Corp. chair John Honderich, the summit delegates are focused on developing an immediate action plan for the region to tackle the global recession.

Politicians expected to attend include Toronto Mayor David Miller, Vaughan Mayor Linda Jackson, Ontario Minister of Economic Development Michael Bryant and federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.

As Ontario sheds manufacturing jobs amid a worldwide recession, organizers want a concrete plan for the entire region, which stretches beyond the 416/ 905 area codes to work together, ignoring traditional geographic boundaries.
