While the movie and TV writers’ strike continues to cause turmoil throughout awards season, the ceremony will go on for the Writers Guild of America — albeit scaled down considerably.
The WGA awards, which honour the year’s best screenplays, will be announced Feb. 9. While the Los Angeles-based WGA West has cancelled its awards ceremony pending the strike’s conclusion, the guild’s New York-based division announced Friday that it will still hold an informal reception.
“We have chosen to honour the nominees and recipients of our awards in the context of our ongoing strike against the studios and networks,” said Michael Winship, president of the WGA East. “This will be a simple event that will rally us together as a union.”
There will be no red carpet to the event and only award nominees, their guests and other guild members will be permitted to attend.
