A Cape Breton man is shaking his head over laws saying he can’t carry a shotgun into the woods to protect himself from coyotes while picking berries or fishing.

Dave Walsh of North Sydney says that’s what he learned when he spoke to Natural Resources Department conservation officers recently about plans to head into the Cape Breton Highlands in a camper with his wife. “I just wanted to have it there just in case,” he said.

Walsh said he was told he could only get the tag required to carry the shotgun if he sets out intending to hunt coyotes.
