Man in hospital as police determine number involved

A male was taken to hospital with at least one gunshot wound after a quiet Burnaby neighbourhood became the Lower Mainland’s latest scene of gunplay yesterday.

Police cordoned off the block around Green Acre Apartments at 3562 Smith Ave. where the shooting occurred in a top floor apartment shortly before noon.

A police spokeswoman would not confirm reports of several men fleeing the scene in a black vehicle.

“At this time we are not in a position to give a suspect description. We are still trying to determine the number of suspects we’re looking for,” said Cpl. Alexandra Mulvihill, adding that a weapon had not been recovered.

Additional unconfirmed reports said that two individuals had been shot and that one or more had been pistol-whipped or stabbed.

A housecleaner who arrived at the building for an appointment after the shooting said that new owners had recently acquired the complex.

“It’s always been seniors living here but they have been complaining about teenagers hanging around outside recently. I see them here morning, noon and night,” said the woman, who declined to give her name.
