Guy Lafleur to appeal conviction on contradictory testimony

MONTREAL – A lawyer for hockey great Guy Lafleur says his client will appeal his conviction on a charge of giving contradictory testimony.

Gilles Ouimet says a motion to appeal was filed in court this week. Lafleur was found guilty of giving the contradictory testimony during his son Mark’s bail hearing in 2007.

Lafleur told the court his son had respected his curfew when he spent two nights at a hotel with his girlfriend.

The motion argues the judge made an error in law because a false declaration must be made with the intent to mislead instead of what Ouimet called a simple omission in Lafleur’s case.

Lafleur is scheduled to be sentenced on June 18.

The Crown asked for a conditional sentence to be served in the community while Lafleur’s lawyer has asked that he get a fine.
