Nova Scotia became the first province in Canada to make a national conference carbon neutral, according to the premier’s office.
The Power of Green conference, which started yesterday in Halifax, will be responsible for emitting roughly 50 tonnes of greenhouse gasses. A local charitable project, Metro Turning Point Centre, will reduce its carbon emissions by that amount with a heating system retrofit.
The retrofit, sponsored by the Nova Scotia Natural Gas Association, will save the shelter more than $6,000 a year in heating costs and reduce emissions by 25 tonnes.
“This sets the model for other conferences in the province and across the country, and we hope it will inspire similar projects,” Premier Darrell Dexter said in a press release yesterday.
