Halifax Rainmen trim roster after scrimmage

The Halifax Rainmen sent three players packing yesterday as the Moncton portion of their training camp came to a close.

The Rainmen cut Quin Humphrey, Larry Diamond and Peter Mulligan, leaving 15 players vying for the final 10 roster spots.

A few more players are expected to be added today.

The Rainmen, who opened camp last Tuesday, held an intra-squad game on Saturday night at Moncton Coliseum, with Team Blue beating Team Black 122-94.

Stefan Welsh, a six-foot-three guard who spent four seasons with the NCAA Division I Arkansas Razorbacks, dropped 28 points in his bid to make the Rainmen.

Fellow tryouts Tajuan Porter and Troy Jackson scored 18 points apiece for Team Black, while fourth-year Rainmen forward Eric Crookshank chipped in with 17.

Welsh, Porter, Jackson and former Georgia Bulldogs guard Mike Mercer are among those who will earn strong consideration for contracts. Owner Andre Levingston said he expects all four to get a chance in Premier Basketball League exhibition games against the Saint John Mill Rats on Dec. 10 and 16.

Returnee Desmond Ferguson (hamstring) and newcomer Taliek Brown (flu) did not play in the intra-squad game.
