What do Edmonton, Halifax, and Yellowknife have in common?
The trio won in their categories for most sustainable cities ranked by Corporate Knights Magazine.
On its website, the magazine gave Halifax props for setting a greenhouse gas reduction target and tracking the progress. Only three other cities — Edmonton, Toronto and Ottawa — did that.
The magazine said Halifax and Saskatoon excelled in providing strong affordable housing programs.
“Halifax, Saskatoon and Saint John residents spend about 18 per cent of their annual income on shelter, whereas Charlottetown residents spend 25 per cent,” it states on the website.
The first-place win is a feather in the mayor’s cap.
“It is so rewarding for HRM to get recognized in this way by this organization,” Mayor Peter Kelly said in a statement.
Halifax ranked fifth overall in the country.
In 2008, Halifax placed second in its category. In 2007, cities weren’t organized in size categories, and HRM placed 17th overall.
