Halifax region weathers brutal winter storm

Haligonians should be waking up to a winter wonderland this morning.

Forecast to be the most significant snowstorm so far this season, the flakes began falling yesterday in the Halifax Regional Municipality by mid-afternoon and were to continue to the early morning hours.

In total, roughly 15 centimetres were forecasted for HRM by Environment Canada, with about 10 cm on the ground by mid-evening.

Outside HRM, Yarmouth and Shelburne counties had 15 cm on the ground by 6:30 p.m., with at least another five forecasted.

There were numerous flight delays at Halifax Stanfield International Airport yesterday due to the storm, along with several cancellations.

“The current weather conditions are impacting a lot of flights,” said Ashley Barnes, a spokeswoman for the airport authority.

The airport’s runways were being cleared constantly, she added.

Both Halifax Regional Police and Halifax RCMP had a quiet night as far as accidents go as most motorists were staying off the snow-covered roads.

“I’m happy to report and happy to say … we don’t have many accidents at all,” said HRP Staff Sgt. Sean Auld, who estimated they responded to only a handful of collisions, none of which were serious.

Nova Scotia Power crews were also enjoying a quiet night, with no serious outages reported.
