Haligonians shake off the winter blues

Oh, sunny, warm days. Don’t they feel good?

After a long winter of cold temperatures and plenty of snow, the second weekend of spring brought mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the double-digits throughout the municipality.

This beautiful March weather was enjoyed by the masses as parks, boardwalks and busy streets were bustling with people enjoying the first taste of warm weather since the fall.

“It breaks the cabin fever,” as Darren Steeves of Halifax put it.

Steeves and his three-year-old daughter Abby were out enjoying the day at the Halifax Common playground around noontime yesterday. The playground was full of kids and parents, most of whom traded in winter jackets for spring ones.

“It’s a great chance to get the kids out,” Steeves said of the warmer weather. “That’s what we’ve been doing all weekend. We’ve been to four parks in two days.”

Nearby at the Halifax Common skate park, 19-year-old Alex McOuat was out on his bike doing tricks and spending time with friends.

McOuat also used the skate park in the winter, but that meant bringing a shovel and wearing a winter jacket.

“First time being in a T-shirt,” he said smiling as the warm sun beat down. “I’m hoping it continues.”

Well, not today, anyway. Today’s forecast calls for rain, with a high of 2 C.
