Handgun seized after officer spots suspicious vehicle

Search of suspects and vehicle revealed handgun, ammunition and canister of bear spray

 

A handgun was seized by police early Saturday after two men fled from their car.

 

Just before 3 a.m. Saturday, an officer and his police dog patrolling near 80 Avenue and 79 Street saw a suspicious vehicle.

As the officer pulled in behind the vehicle, police say in a release, it accelerated away and disappeared into a nearby residential area. Moments later the vehicle was spotted, abandoned in a back alley near 75 Street and 77 Avenue.

Soon after, another officer in the area spotted a suspicious man running east from the area of the abandoned vehicle.

That man was arrested by the officer without incident.

An officer and his police dog, Sisco, tracked a second suspect to the door of a residential garage.

The officer told anyone in the garage to come out and within seconds the other suspect was taken into custody.

A search of the suspects and the vehicle revealed a handgun, ammunition and a canister of bear spray.

A 28-year-old man has been charged with possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of break in tools, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and several firearms related offences.

A 26-year-old has been charged with possession of break in tools, breach of conditions and several firearms related offenses.
