Harper arrives in Europe to begin whirlwind three-day trip

PARIS – Prime Minister Stephen Harper has arrived in Paris to kick off a three-day European trip that will also see him visit Germany, Italy and Britain.

Harper is scheduled to inaugurate an exposition related to the 400th anniversary of Quebec City and to meet with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

The two men will likely discuss the environment and economic co-operation between their respective countries.

Harper is expected to use the trip to explain his strategy for the fight against greenhouse gases, a plan that has been heavily criticized by environmentalists in Canada and abroad.

He also hopes to lay the groundwork for the upcoming G8 meeting, which is a summit of world economic powers.

The meeting will focus on climate change and there are feelings the United States and Canada could find themselves isolated.
