Have a Summer Fling with the theatre

A new theatre series in the heart of downtown will fill a gap in Ottawa’s theatre scene, said a local director Thursday.

“Most professional theatre runs … from September to May or June,” said Kate Hurman, a board member for the Arts Court.

“So if people are interested in seeing theatre in the summer, they have to leave town … You have to go to Blythe, or Stratford or to Shaw.”

Last summer, the Arts Court and the Downtown Rideau Business Improvement Association partnered to put on a single production. It was so successful, they’re offering nine shows in six venues this summer.

Educating Rita — of which Hurman is director — is the opening show for the Downtown Rideau Summer Fling — A Theatrical Affair.

It’s nice, she said, “to showcase local talent and use businesses here to put on a production so we don’t have to go out to find work, we can just stay home.

“This fills a huge gap.”
