If you’re heading over the border to get a head start on Christmas shopping this weekend, make sure you get on the road early.

Make that really early.

Lew Holloway, the general manager of the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission, recommends getting to the bridge before 7 a.m. to avoid waiting.

“If I’m going into the States on a Thursday or Friday I’d certainly get there early in the morning,” he says.

The alternative is crossing in the evening, he says, after 5 p.m.

And coming home?

Same thing. Fill that thermos with coffee and leave as early as you can.

The longest waits to get back into Canada on Black Friday — the biggest U.S. shopping day of the year — are between and 1 p.m. and 11 p.m., says the Canada Border Services Agency.
