In honour of St. Patrick's Day, the "secret ingredient" is beer and the theme is green. Cupcakes are prepared ahead and judged on presentation, taste and creativity. Amateurs and pros alike are invited to compete.
There's a $15 entry fee. The winner gets gift certificates and the thrill of having his or her cupcake featured in the bakery.
Visitors pay a $5 cover charge, and can sample the goodies and vote for the people's choice award.

Iron Cupcake was started by Milwaukee's Sandy Ploy, who blogs on the site No One Puts Cupcake in a Corner (ironcupcakemilwaukee.com). Bakeries hold the challenges once a month.
The idea is branching out across North America, and even into Europe.
