Three’s Company and Step by Step star Suzanne Somers said her visit to Ottawa next month will be good for the city — in more ways than one.

“I was (in Ottawa) last year,” the TV and film actress, bestselling author and healthy living advocate told Metro Ottawa from her home in southern California earlier this week. “It was so beautiful — and freezing cold. But I went out and walked and walked anyway. I thought I was dressed warmly.”

The actress said she stopped four times — to buy warmer gloves, warmer socks, warmer boots and a sweater to put under her coat.

“I think I was good for the economy,” she laughed.

No doubt she’ll be prepared this time, when she’s scheduled to give a lecture on how Ottawans can lead healthier lives on April 4.

The talk at Tudor Hall, entitled Breakthrough: Eight Steps to Wellness, is based on her latest New York Times bestseller of the same name.

A breast cancer diagnosis nine years ago got Somers thinking more about health.

“I thought, ‘I have to change my life.’ And in doing so, I found a real path to wellness, which is what my book is about,” she said. “At Tudor Hall, I’ll be sharing the things I’ve learned through interviewing doctors. I’ve used my celebrity to get to the cutting-edge doctors in the world,” she said.

People aren’t sleeping enough and are turning to medication rather than exploring natural healing.

“People don’t understand the effects of chemicals,” she said. “People are getting cancer younger and younger. We have to start connecting the dots.”

Career-wise, she’s worn many hats through the years. But Somers said “this is the most fulfilled and satisfied phase of my life.”

Her advice? “You can’t get stuck,” she said. “I don’t know where I would be if I was still doing sitcom. I guess I would be a grandmother or a judge. And that doesn’t sound very interesting. I’ve just been going with my true interests.”
