A preliminary hearing is set for November for the Halifax police constable charged with extorting money.

Const. Jeffrey Buchanan was in Halifax provincial court yesterday to enter a plea on charges of extortion and breach of trust stemming from a December police investigation.

Buchanan pleaded not guilty to both counts, with the judge setting Nov. 2 as the date for a preliminary hearing.

Buchanan is accused of trying to extort money from a convicted drug dealer. He’s also facing one count of possession of marijuana after a subsequent search of his house took place. A preliminary hearing on that charge is set for Nov. 16.
