Help from furry friends

She’s furry, fuzzy and friendly.

Tallulah, a five-year-old Labradoodle, has been a big hit among youth whose parents are undergoing cancer treatment.

The popular animal has been helping provide pet-assisted therapy with social worker Martina Quinn.

“She provides a great distraction and comfort to kids and teens dealing with their parents going through cancer treatment and being diagnosed,” Quinn said.

“It helps the participants open up and feel more comfortable to talk during what can be a very painful and frightening time.”

The facilitator-led sessions are held twice a year and are limited to 12 participants.

Psychological oncologist Dr. John Robinson said Tallulah often wags her tail throughout the sessions and loves getting attention.

“She sometimes has a knack for sensing when someone needs a little extra attention so she will cozy up to them,” Robinson said, adding Tallulah is very calm and good-humoured.

Tallulah is so popular, some participants request her by name.
