The Halifax Mooseheads snapped a number of frustrating slumps in convincing fashion last night in Bathurst, N.B.
Rookie goaltender Anthony Terenzio posted his first career shutout in just his 16th appearance and rookie forwards Luca Ciampini and Darcy Ashley scored two goals apiece as the Mooseheads dumped the host Bathurst Titan 5-0.
It had been almost 26 full months — and 158 games — since the Mooseheads’ last shutout back on Oct. 17, 2008.
The Mooseheads also shook off a four-game losing streak and scored more than three goals for the first time since Nov. 19.
“It was a really good win and it was nice our players got rewarded,” said Mooseheads head coach Bobby Smith, who praised his team’s efforts on the weekend after losses to the nationally-ranked Saint John Sea Dogs and Quebec Remparts.
“We really did play two excellent games on the weekend and came out on the wrong end of the score, but we played another excellent game tonight and it went our way.”
Terenzio, returning from injury and making his first start since Nov. 26, made 27 saves, while the Mooseheads went five-for-five on the penalty kill.
“We killed penalties very well, but Anthony made some excellent saves,” Smith said. “He gobbled up rebounds, caught the puck and had a good, solid game.”
Carl Gelinas had the other goal for Halifax, snapping an eight-game goalless drought.
The Mooseheads, 11-23-0-1, are back in action on Friday on the road against the Moncton Wildcats. They host the Titan on Saturday before breaking for the holidays.
