Hey Romeo woos lunch crowd

Country music fans descended upon Churchill Square yesterday as Hey Romeo — Group of the Year nominees at this week’s upcoming Canadian Country Music Awards — played a free, lunchtime concert.

The concert was one of many events happening around the city in support of Canadian Country Music Week, held this year in Edmonton. The week will culminate Sunday with a live televised awards ceremony at Rexall Place.

“I didn’t know this was happening,” said Trina Bjornson, a supervisor of the Department of Justice at the Edmonton Law Courts.

Bjornson and a friend decided to eat their lunches on the Square after hearing music playing across the street from their office.

“We’re country girls so this drew our attention,” she said.

“Normally, we spend our lunchtime shopping, but we might come here more often, maybe save some money that way,” she added, laughing.

Heather Shepherd, the program co-ordinator for Churchill Square, noted that outside of this CMA-themed concert there will be events happening in the Square every weekday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. until at least sometime in October.
