HGTV DIY master to speak at home show

The Gemini Award-winning star of HGTV’s House of Bryan and DIY Disaster still makes his home in Oakville, Ont., where he grew up. He still works at his company, Baeumler Quality Construction and Renovations Inc., and is often the last one at a work site at the end of the day.

Fame hasn’t changed Bryan Baeumler too much.

The Gemini Award-winning star of HGTV’s House of Bryan and DIY Disaster still makes his home in Oakville, Ont., where he grew up. He still works at his company, Baeumler Quality Construction and Renovations Inc., and is often the last one at a work site at the end of the day.

But one thing has definitely changed — a simple run to the hardware store can now take hours because of the number of fans that approach him.

“It can take me an hour to get a piece of trim,” Baeumler chuckled. “I’ll be answering questions about waterproofing and shingles, but I don’t mind.”

In fact, Baeumler is looking forward to these questions and more when he speaks at the Ottawa Home and Garden Show at Lansdowne Park this weekend.

Celebrating 30 years, the show begins at noon tomorrow and runs through Sunday, featuring gardening and home improvement ideas, presentations by experts, and culinary demonstrations.

Baeumler will be talking about renovations in general, how to avoid common pitfalls, how people can put green in their homes and how to save money.

“Another big thing I’ll be talking about is how to build with your spouse,” he said.

“Quite often, the stereotypical thing is the wife bugging the husband to do the job, but the stereotype is falling apart,” he said. “With so many seminars and so much information available, it’s accessible to everybody.”

A growing number of people are doing renovations themselves, he said.

“When the economy is down, doing it yourself is a good way of saving money,” he said.
