High-flying crowd-pleasers

Fans of circus-style body movement such as synchronized trapeze won’t want to miss Cirque du Soleil’s Alegria, which will run from Aug. 11 to Aug. 22 at Rexall Place.

“Alegria is a Cirque signature,” said Genevieve Laurendeau, the show’s publicist. “It premiered in Montreal in ’94 and has toured worldwide for the past 16 years.”

The two-and-a-half hour show showcases many incredible acrobatic feats, including synchro trapeze and aerial high bars, among others.

“We decided to restage (the production) so that we can present it in arenas,” Laurendeau explained.

She added that audiences can expect a “mesmerizing production.”

“Live music on stage, amazing costumes, nine incredible acts, acrobatics you’ve probably never seen before.”

Alegria will feature 55 performers from 15 different countries.

“They all have different backgrounds,” Laurendeau said.

“Some are former Olympic athletes, others are champions in their own disciplines.”

She also noted that the show is sure to please audience members of all ages.

“It’s a show for the entire family,” she said.

“It has clown acts; they will find them completely hilarious.”
