Fresh off a provincial women’s soccer title and a national bronze medal, Halifax Dunbrack has stacked the deck to go for gold.
Dunbrack, which is preparing to open the Nova Scotia Soccer League Premiership season next week, benefited when rival Halifax City decided to fold earlier this month, picking up four key players from the 2008 national champs.
All-stars Hannah Abenheimer at midfield and Ally Read on the back line, along with midfielder Rieka Santilli and defender Laurel Fougere, have joined Dunbrack’s forces.
The club has also added Liz Cook, a keeper who previously starred at the NCAA Division I level with Hartford and won a national senior championship in 2004 with Halifax Athens.
Throw in the likes of reigning league MVP and Golden Boot winner Leanne Huck up front, all-star Mel Clarke on defence and supporting goal-scorers Katie Richard and Teresa Morrison, and you have quite a mix.
“If we get everybody to come together, this team has the player base to compete for a gold medal,” said Dunbrack head coach Jack Hutchison. “We would definitely be a team in contention.”
