High school eyes fake turf for field

West Calgary High School’s athletes will eventually be punting, sliding and rolling on fake grass if a committee passes a proposal today to install artificial turf on their field.

Although it’s more expensive, a turf field becomes three times more useful while requiring less maintenance and resources, according to Shelly Shea, a WinSport Canada spokesperson.

“You can start as soon as the snow melts and keep going till it starts flying again,” said Shea.

She also said the fake turf reduces injuries: “At Shouldice, we found a very big decrease in our number of ambulance calls.”
