Highway crash kills three city residents

Three Edmontonians are dead and one is in critical condition at a B.C. hospital following a horrific highway crash Sunday.

Two local couples were returning from a skiing trip around 9:30 a.m., when their SUV collided head-on with a semi truck.

The SUV was travelling northbound on Highway 5, two kilometres north of Heffley, B.C., when it was struck by the semi.

The SUV sustained severe damage in the crash. A couple from Edmonton — a 52-year-old woman and her 57-year-old husband — were killed instantly in the accident.

The 55-year-old man driving the vehicle also died on scene. His 52-year-old wife was rushed to the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, where she remained in critical condition yesterday.

Neither speed, weather conditions, nor alcohol were factors in the crash.

The semi driver, a 57-year-old Chilliwack, B.C., resident, walked away from the collision unscathed.

Mounties have not yet released the names of the victims. No charges have been laid in the incident.
