It’s more than a happy coincidence 240 sailors on board HMCS Fredericton will return home on the navy’s 100th birthday.
The Fredericton is returning this morning from a six-month deployment in the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean.
“We would never delay the return of a ship, especially after a six-month deployment, but we were able to tweak the time so they would be able to arrive in Halifax on the 100th anniversary,” said Capt. Craig Walkington, an organizer of today’s centennial celebration.
The Fredericton was on a NATO assignment to counter piracy and terrorism.
A sister ship, HMCS Toronto, is docked outside the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic today.
“The public can see it from the jetty, but it won’t be open for tours,” Walkington said.
Customs
Capt. Craig Walkington said the frigate made a weekend stop in St. John’s to pass customs, so as soon as it docks in Halifax crew members can step right into the arms of their families.
