Hockey gala to help fund Rink of Dreams

“Build this arena and kids will skate,” said Mayor Jim Watson yesterday as he helped announce that the annual Hockey Canada gala dinner will raise funds for the construction of a Rink of Dreams in Ottawa.

“Build this arena and kids will skate,” said Mayor Jim Watson yesterday as he helped announce that the annual Hockey Canada gala dinner will raise funds for the construction of a Rink of Dreams in Ottawa.

The gala will provide a legacy fund to build the refrigerated outdoor community rink in Ottawa and the Senators will be hard at work raising funds for this project, said the team’s president, Cyril Leeder.

“The gala, we hope, will raise over $350,000 to kick off the first Rink of Dreams project,” he said.

Leeder, who attended the Montreal gala in 2009, said the Ottawa version will be a great opportunity for the Senators and the community to come together to do something special for the city.

Watson was equally excited about the announcement, saying it would be “the first of its kind” for Ottawa.

“The Senators have committed today to actually provide the top-up funds to make sure there’s no cost to the taxpayers to build this Rink of Dreams,” said Watson.

A committee will determine the rink’s location, which will operate annually from November to March.
