Hockey great Gilmour loves making barbecue

Former NHL player Doug Gilmour says he loves his wife’s cooking.

Doug Gilmour, retired NHL hockey player, player development adviser for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Born in Kingston, Ont., the Leaf great played for many other teams, including the 1989 Stanley Cup champion Calgary Flames. He retired in 2003.

Q: What is your fondest memory from your family kitchen?

A: My wife painting the kitchen red.

Q: Who is your favourite cook?

A: My wife Amy. You need to ask!

Q: What kitchen appliance can’t you live without?

A: That would have to be the coffee maker.

Q: What traditions from your background involving food do you partake in?

A: It’s not a tradition, but I really enjoy dry garlic meatballs any time.

Q: What is your favourite food to cook?

A: I love to barbecue!

Q: Do you have a cultural dish that you prepare that you always have at your family gatherings?

A: My wife cooks up a feast at our house for Christmas and Thanksgiving. My job is carving the turkey!
