Homeowners exclusively selected the best builders for customer service on a new Tarion survey.

It would be nice if all of the important things in life came with a warranty: Marriages, children, fine wine, good food. But at least one very important item does: A new home in Ontario.

A house is often the single most expensive purchase we make and for those who purchase a new home, the Ontario New Homes Warranties Plan Act requires builders to provide comprehensive warranty coverage. Tarion Warranty Corporation (Tarion) is the private corporation that is responsible for enforcing the act and making sure those warranty requirements are met.

But homebuyers often don’t even know their new home comes with a warranty. For those who do, a new study shows they are very satisfied with the service they received from Tarion. A survey of over 53,000 new Ontario homebuyers yielded almost 11,000 respondents and found that 85 per cent of them have a favourable view of Tarion.

The survey was conducted both online and by mail by Harris/Decima on behalf of Tarion in September.

“Homes are a significant purchase for Ontarians, we want to make sure consumers get what they paid for and the warranty program does just that,” said Tarion president and CEO Greg Gee.

Respondents demonstrated an appreciation for Tarion’s commitment to helping new homeowners understand their warranty rights and obligations, and ensuring that new home builders fulfill their warranty obligations. Eighty-seven per cent were satisfied with their interaction with Tarion, citing timely response and follow-up as key factors.

“It’s essential that homebuyers feel they are getting good value,” Gee said. “These survey results show that the new home warranty program works well and people are pleased with the services and protection Tarion offers. They confirm that we’re making good progress toward our goal of providing exceptional customer service.”

The second part of the survey asked homeowner’s to rate the experience they had with their builder. The results were used as the basis for the 2007 Tarion Awards of Excellence which recognize outstanding homebuilders for their attention to customer service. This was the first year that the winners were selected exclusively by homeowners.
