Hope hits city streets

Thousands of Edmontonians jammed the city core yesterday and added a pink hue to a grey autumn afternoon.

Emily Hopgood came to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s CIBC Run for the Cure to show support for her best friend: Her mom, diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2009.

“I love her more than anything,” said the 17-year-old. “It was amazing to see all the hope, the laughing and crying. It was awesome.”

Emily and her little brother Mike raised $1,500 for breast cancer research.

They were among roughly 9,800 others who left Sir Winston Churchill Square to walk, run, wheel or stroll five kilometres to the finish line despite brisk weather.

One of the top fundraisers was Westminster Junior High School.

Students from the school’s International Baccalaureate Middle Years program raised $38,600 this year, in part for the promise of seeing their principal dunked in ice water if they raised enough funds.

Over the past eight years, Westminster has contributed more than $100,000 to the cause.
