Hospital’s new trauma unit opens Monday

The Ottawa Hospital is opening a new trauma unit at its Civic campus Monday.

The new 12-bed unit will provide extra space for doctors and nurses and increased privacy for patients and families.

The unit will have new equipment, improved infection control, spacious bathrooms, a family lounge and larger windows to let in more natural light.

“The unit, triple the size of our current one, allows us to provide world-class patient care in a functional environment,” said Kent Woodhall, the Ottawa Hospital’s clinical director of surgery. “Infection control issues, space issues, and getting technology to the bedside has been a huge challenge for us in the past and this unit gives us that mandate.”

The Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus is the regional adult trauma centre for eastern Ontario.

The trauma centre will require a staff comprised of trauma surgeons, physicians, registered nurses, respiratory therapists and social workers. Additional team members include physiotherapists, dieticians, speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists.
