At the walk-up Pure Power Juice Bar inside the historic Byward Market Square, you have a choice of two made-to-order savoury crêpes. You can either choose a Garden Crêpe ($5.75) with egg, spinach, tomato, cheese and pesto or for 22 cents more, my favourite, the Western Crêpe ($5.97) with ham, spinach, tomato, cheese and pesto.
On a fancy crêpe maker, the owner pours the batter and spreads it around with a scraper. As it cooks, she sprinkles the ham along with spinach and chopped tomato. Then with a plastic spoon, she spreads the pesto around and sprinkles it all with the cheese. If you’re lucky, she speckles the top with just the right amount of salt and pepper. After folding it up, it’s delivered piping hot.
And don’t forget all the smoothie options. I’m partial to piña coladas, so the Pineapple Coconut Smoothie ($4.42) called my name, but it wasn’t as sweet as I would have liked.
In this square full of arts and crafts, Pure Power Juice Bar is a good find.
