Housing starts up: CMHC

Housing starts in the Ottawa Census Metropolitan Area are up 65 per cent from the same period a year ago, according to data released by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation Thursday.

Last month, housing starts reached 695 units, mostly due to activity in the condominium and apartment segments, the report stated. Single dwellings edged lower, but it was more than offset by activity in the apartment segment.

“Year-to-date apartment starts have reached one of their highest levels in over a decade, helping to sustain housing starts activity in the region,” said Rocco Caminiti, CMHC’s market analyst for Ottawa.

New housing starts were in the Old City of Ottawa, Osgoode, Cumberland, Kanata, Nepean and Gloucester.
