David and Mandy
New Westminster, B.C.
Together since 2004
Both David and I (Mandy) had followed friends to a Simon Fraser University pub party and, before we knew it, we were squished together in a crowd of strangers.
The circumstances were less than romantic, but those close quarters allowed his infectious humour to grab my attention. By the end of the night, I was enamoured.
After a few phone conversations, David and I went on our first date. I knew immediately that there was something special about him, and when he took a call from his sister during our date and explained to her whom he was with, I could tell by the tone of his voice that he had been feeling the same way about me.
David is easy to fall in love with, and I did — fast.
We were lucky to know the strength and depth of our love early on as we were about to face hardship. A year and a half into our relationship, David suffered a traumatic brain injury. He had to undergo a year of intense therapy in order to regain memories of our life together. Although he was changed, I knew our love was something special, and we remained committed to each other.
Ten months after his accident, David and his sister planned a surprise trip to Toronto for me. He proposed at the top of the CN Tower. We married on March 3, 2011.
