How would you fix the deficit?

Graham Steele’s budget salvage road show kicks off Friday in Sydney.

The provincial finance minister will be holding 26 town hall meetings in 16 communities to get citizen input on how to climb out of deficit. Specifically, they’re looking at what should be cut and what taxes should be raised.

“What we’re going to try to do in this dialogue is really, essentially to force Nova Scotians to confront the real questions that governments have to confront,” Steele said.

One area noticeably not on the list of stops is peninsula Halifax. Instead meetings will be held in four other HRM locations — Dartmouth, Tantallon, Eastern Passage and Lower Sackville. Steele said this is by design.

“Traditionally people from outlying areas have always been expected to come into the peninsula for meetings. This time we’re just going out to those communities,” he said.

“I know that people on the peninsula can find their way out to those communities.”
